With a focus on solid theological teaching, practical application, and spiritual formation, Essential Truths is written for clergy, for ministry students, and for lay leaders. Essential Truths shows how the Anglican Reformers “got it right” on the central matters of the Christian Faith, and that these teachings are both biblical and relevant for today. This book is designed as an easy-to-find reference on the Articles and as an introduction to the basic themes of systematic theology. The foreword is written by J. I. Packer.
Bp. Rodgers will be doing a book signing at Trinity on Wednesday, April 13, after chapel.
What pastors and scholars are saying…
“The Jerusalem Declaration of 2008 brought to focus the centrality of the Thirty-Nine Articles for Anglican identity. In the Global South, the Articles have often been revered but seldom studied carefully, even in theological colleges. John Rodgers’ exposition, with his usual flair and wisdom, should go a long way in providing a guide for Anglican pastors and theologians throughout the world.”
Rev. Prof. Stephen Noll
Vice Chancellor (Retired)
Uganda Christian University, Mukono, Uganda
‘The need for the Thirty-Nine Articles as an anchor for Anglican Theology has become increasingly evident in recent years, but they are not well known or understood. Bishop John Rodgers is exceptionally well placed to remedy that malaise after a lifetime of teaching theology rooted in those articles. This long-awaited book explains both their biblical foundations and their practical applications in a way that is accessible for lay leaders and rewarding for experienced clergy. I am very much enjoying using it in my teaching and recommend it highly.’
The Very Rev. Dr. Justyn Terry
Dean and President, Associate Professor of Systematic Theology
Trinity School for Ministry, Ambridge, Pennsylvania
“Those Anglicans without a keen appreciation of the “Thirty-Nine Articles” deserve Henry VIII as their “founder.” In an age that denigrates doctrine, with disastrous results, it is especially welcome and crucially beneficial to have a fresh and sympathetic exposition of the faith expressed in the official and historic Anglican confession. John Rodgers’ contemporary treatment is saturated with love for the Gospel. He has no living peer as a scholar with such a winsome blend of rigorous theology, biblical scholarship, and pastoral sensitivity.”
