Morning Psalms: 63, 98 | Evening Psalm: 103
Daniel 9:3-10 | Hebrews 2:10-18 | John 12:44-50
“Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things!
His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.
The LORD has made known his salvation;
he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations.
He has remembered his steadfast love
and faithfulness to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.”
(Psalm 98:1-3)
The Psalmist rejoices because the Lord has revealed Himself as righteous. Salvation has been given by the Lord and all creation rejoices.
In our gospel reading today God’s, “steadfast love and faithfulness” has been self proclaimed to the house of Israel in the person of Jesus Christ. But the Pharisees remained skeptical. Their Messiah was expected to come in glory to rule in power and authority over the Roman oppressors. This is as far as their political eyes could see. And we would have been right there with them.
We must take stock of our own expectation or image of a better world. We probably have a vision of the way things should be and not as they are. What is your important fix? A better marriage? A better job? A better government? Better health? More money?
When we receive Jesus as Lord, we also receive a better life, an eternal one. Jesus reveals Himself as one and the same with God. How peculiar these words must have been to the crowd, especially the Pharisees who knew about the Messiah but rejected Jesus. The nation longed for a king, and the king came to save His people and give Himself to them so that they would have eternal life. Let us rejoice that we no longer remain in darkness because we have seen the light of the world.
Lord Jesus, help us to see through our own images of a better world and allow You to rule in our hearts so that together, we may change the world by proclaiming “Your kingdom has come and Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Amen.
