Morning Psalms: 70, 71 | Evening Psalm: 74
Genesis 42:29-38 | 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 | Mark 4:21-34
“May all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you! May those who love your salvation say evermore, God is great!”
Psalm 70:4 ESV
The words of praise and adoration in Psalm 70:4 follow three verses of intercessory prayer for the Lord to quickly help and deliver the psalmist from those who seek to take his life. David is looking for quick relief from his anxiety and resolution to his concern, but he is also quick to celebrate the rejoicing that would follow when God intervenes on his behalf and secures his safety.
When you encounter times of difficulty or even danger in your life do you remember to rejoice? Recently, in the midst of my studies, I required medical intervention: ambulance, ER, overnight stay, the whole show. During these days of trouble I reached out for Jesus, asking Him to take up my cause, carry me through, comfort my family, and help me discern God’s will. This time of intense intercessory prayer was also a time of increased confidence. God’s Spirit was present in each conversation and evident in the prayers of the students, faculty, and staff at Trinity. My situation unfolded into a time of celebration of and thanksgiving for God’s loving presence in my life.
David believed that God was with him and would hear his prayer. Even though David was in difficult circumstances and his life was in danger, he trusted in a just and righteous God. David knew that with each trial or difficulty God was able to act and would do so when the time was right. During times of trouble David was able to lean on his faith in the Lord and look forward to the day of his salvation.
Gracious God, help me to remember that Your Spirit is present in all that I do and to rejoice that You have sent Your Son to be my help and my deliverer. Amen.
