Morning Psalms: 24, 29 | Evening Psalm: 103
Zechariah 9:9-12 | 1 Timothy 6:12-16 | Luke 19:41-48

You can hear the rumble in the distance, the faint echo of drums and pipes, of voices singing and feet marching resolutely across the dust-laden limestone that guides them over the hills. They come marching from Bethany to Jerusalem, reenacting the entry of our Lord into the city many years ago. As they peek over the precipice of that last hill before they enter into the east gates of the Old City, the mass parade seems as if it will never end, as shouts of praise rise upward, “The Lord sits enthroned as King forever!”

But the celebration does not last long. The following day the streets are filled with vendors and merchants selling their religious wares, hooligans in a holy place. The sheep have scattered, and soon the shepherd will be struck down. How will God respond?

He will rise. The Son will rise and shine His light into dark places; He will bring His everlasting love to a world that all too readily denied Him. He will speak peace to the nations. Thank the Lord that He does not respond to us according to our sins. Instead, He shows compassion to those who fear Him; He redeems them out of the pit and brings them up onto the hill.

Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD and stand in His holy place? Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, cleansed and purified by the King of glory, who sanctified the temple of His Body through His own blood. He who breathed life into dust, and through death brought life, has come and conquered, and He will come again. Let us raise the gates, and open the doors, that the King of glory may come in.

God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, give us clean hands and pure hearts, that we might bring Your compassionate love and cleansing power to a dark and dying world. Amen.
