Morning Psalms: 30, 32 | Evening Psalms: 42, 43
Ezekiel 39:21-29 | Philippians 4:10-20 | John 17:20-26

John 17 has been called Jesus’ “high-priestly prayer.” In it He intercedes on behalf of the Church to His Father in heaven. Earlier in the prayer, He asked that the Apostles would be kept pure from the world and be sanctified by the word of truth. Here, Jesus’ prayer shifts from the Apostles to us who have believed in Him because of the word of the Apostles. We have the privilege of listening in as Jesus prays for us. He prays that we would be one as He and His Father are one. Love is our unity and that love is meant to be shared.

The unity of the Church, our love for each other, is meant to be an expression of the love of the Father for the Son. I was recently at a wedding of a dear friend of mine. The Prayer Book reminds us that marriage is intended for the mutual joy of husband and wife and, when it is God’s will, for the procreation of children. It is most natural that the mutual joy of man and woman should find its expression in sharing that joy with their children. In the same way, it pleased the Trinity that the love that is Theirs from all eternity in Their fellowship of perfect joy and unity should be expressed in sharing that love with us. Furthermore, God’s love is not meant for us alone, but for the whole world. God wants to make Himself known to the world so that they too can know His joy and share His love. It is our mission to make Him known. “God is Love” (1 John 4:8, 16) and believers are meant to embody that love in our love for each other so that all the world will know who God is.

Most merciful Triune God, from all eternity You are perfect love. In Your abounding grace You have extended that love to us in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we too may be ambassadors of Your love in this fractured world. In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
