Morning Psalms: 93, 96 | Evening Psalm: 34
Genesis 44:1-17 | Romans 8: 1-10 | John 5:25-29

During Lent, Sundays, being the day that we celebrate our Lord’s Resurrection, function as a respite from our lenten disciplines. They are a day to rest in the reality that grace always precedes any discipline we practice. In our Epistle reading, we are told that our true identity is rooted in the fact that the Spirit dwells in us through the work of Christ. “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus… you, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit…” (Rom 8:1,9).

We usually need this reminder. In Lent we fast, practice confession, and with the guidance of the Spirit assess our life in Christ; we need the grace of the Spirit to help us understand that God is the one guiding this process. Christ and the Holy Spirit are working in us, forming us into living members of the body of Christ.

This work is often painful. We both hate and love the work of death coming into resurrection in us. Yet, as we walk through this life struggling with the death in us as new life is born in us, our hope is firmly planted in Christ our Resurrection. The reality of our lives is that Christ is the beginning, the means, and the goal of our sanctification. All is grace.

This grace extends as far as the day of judgment, which we read about in John chapter five. In this passage we learn that even there, we who are in Christ will be met by grace, because it is the Son of Man who will judge us. He who “partook of the same nature…” as us, is our judge. In Christ we are not condemned, we are given the Spirit to truly live. Thus we joyfully press on in the grace-filled work of our sanctification.

God Be in my head and in my understanding;
God be in my eyes, and in my looking;
God be in my mouth, and in my speaking;
God be in my heart, and in my thinking;
God be at my end, and at my departing. Amen
